The 2026 quota
| Total | 8,500 permits |
|---|---|
| B residence permits | 4,500 |
| L short-stay permits | 4,000 |
| Who | Skilled professionals from outside the EU/EFTA |
| Who applies | The employer, to the canton |
What the employer must show
The employer must show that it could not find a suitable candidate in Switzerland or the EU/EFTA area. A free place in the quota does not mean a permit will be granted if the other conditions are not met.
What this means for you
- A Swiss offer for unskilled work to a non-EU citizen is a serious warning sign.
- The canton decides first, so ask which canton the employer is applying to.
- EU and UK citizens have separate rules.
