Foreign workers remain important to Germany's labour market
Germany's Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs reported that 5.99 million foreign nationals were in employment in May 2026. That was 185,000 more than a year earlier, with the increase coming from nationals of countries outside the EU.
The wider labour market remains difficult
The ministry's July update described continued pressure on both the labour and vocational training markets. Unemployment rose during the beginning of the summer break, while employment subject to social insurance contributions declined slightly from the previous month.
What the figures mean for international applicants
The statistics confirm that workers from abroad remain an important part of the German economy. They do not, however, mean that every application or occupation will qualify for a permit. The correct route still depends on the employer, role, salary, qualifications and supporting documents.

Germany continues to need international workers, but applicants should treat a verified job offer and a consistent document package as the starting point. Labour-market demand alone does not replace the legal requirements for a residence or work permit.
